Healthy Greek Style Meatballs

OVEN BAKED
GREEK STYLE TURKEY MEATBALLS

As an Italian, I’m definitely no stranger to making homemade meatballs, but I have to say…these Greek style turkey meatballs are on another level when it comes to taste!

I absolutely love the fresh ingredients often used in Greek cooking so I was really hoping to capture some of that authentic flavor that is associated with Greek food while keeping some of my own traditional meatball-making methods!

These meatballs are baked to perfection by being a little bit crispy on the outside with the perfect level of moisture on the inside and come packed with a ton of flavor. I aimed to combine some of my favorite fresh ingredients that stay true to the culture such as feta cheese, kalamata olives, fresh lemon and a variety of delicious herbs

I chose to use a lean meat option like turkey for this recipe, however, if you’d like to make this more traditional, you could substitute the turkey for lamb or pork, which are both more commonly used in Greece.

I paired this recipe with my favorite tzatziki sauce but it would also pair extremely well with hummus and pita as a snack or next to a side of lemon potatoes or Greek salad as a meal!

THE RECIPE

Yields 18-20 MEATBALLS

prep time: 15 minutes // bake time: 30 minutes

total time: 45 minutes

ingredients:

  • 1 Pound Ground Turkey (I used 85% lean, 15% fat blend)
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/3 Cup Crumbled Feta Cheese
  • 1/3 Cup Oat Flour
  • 1/4 Cup Red Onion, diced
  • 1/4 Cup Kalamata Olives, pitted & diced
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried Dill
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Cumin

method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F/190C degrees and prepare a large rimmed baking tray by spraying with non-stick or lining with parchment paper.
  2. Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix together thoroughly by using either a stand mixer, a wooden spoon or with clean hands until ingredients are fully combined.
  3. Roll the mixture in between your hands to form the meatballs. They should be about 1 1/2 inches wide (roughly 2 tablespoons worth of the mixture.)
  4. Place the meatballs on your rimmed baking tray so they are not touching.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes until the meatballs are slightly browned on top.

recipe notes:

  1. Best kept in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days!
  2. Pair these meatballs with your favorite tzatziki or hummus and pita for a delicious Greek style meal or snack!

enjoy!
