skillet apple crisp

Ah yes, one of my favorite times of year…apple season!

Growing up my family would make it a tradition to go to our local apple orchard, pick as many apples and we could and then bake apple desserts for weeks on end! Pies, caramel apples, crumbles, crisps… you name it!

This skillet apple crisp is the same warm & delicious fall dessert that we all know and love but without the loads of refined sugar and highly processed ingredients!

This recipe combines wholesome ingredients such as fresh apples, rolled oats, pure maple, coconut sugar and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Pair with some dairy free vanilla ice cream and you have perfection!

Yields 6-8 servings

prep time: 15 minutes // BAKE TIME: 40 MINUTES

TOTAL TIME: 55 MINUTES

ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 5 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored & chopped (I used 3 granny smith 2 gala apples)
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups gluten free rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup oat flour
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F/180C degrees.
  2. To a large bowl add the chopped apples, coconut sugar, maple syrup, coconut oil, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and salt. Mix together until apples are fully covered by the other ingredients.
  3. In a second, medium-sized bowl, combine the rolled oats, coconut oil, oat flour, coconut sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt and mix together fully to create the crumble topping.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture into a cast iron skillet and place on the stovetop over high heat for 5-7 minutes until apples begin to soften.
  5. Remove the pan from heat, cover the top of the apples with the crumble topping.
  6. Place into the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until top is golden.
  7.  Serve with dairy free ice cream or whipped topping!

recipe notes:

  1. Store in an airtight container for 3-5 days!
